The Gendered Housing Crisis for Older Women in Small(er) Canadian Communities

Housing is a Human Right
Access to adequate, safe, and affordable housing is vital to
an individual’s wellbeing, so much so that the United
Nations recognizes Housing as a Human Right. The
importance of a place to call home is enshrined in Article 25
of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states
that:

Everyone has the right to a standard of living
adequate for the health and well-being of
[themselves] and of [their] family, including
food, clothing, housing and medical care and
necessary social services, and the right to
security in the event of unemployment, sickness,
disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of
livelihood in circumstances beyond [their]
control.
